Atmospheric Modeling

Atmospheric Modeling

Our researchers have extensive experience simulating conditions around the world using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. We can operate WRF in two ways:

  • In its mesoscale configuration WRF models simulate weather and climate over large areas of the globe. This provides forecasts of the wind speeds across the rotor diameter of a wind turbine.
  • In its large eddy simulation (LES) configuration WRF models simulate the turbulence inflow at the edge of a wind farm in both idealized and real-world cases. Recently, we have been working to apply LES to real-world applications related to wind energy.
